Doctor denies ombudsman's claims on Valjevo assessment; says email blocked as spam

Serbian Ombudsman Zoran Pašalić has publicly stated that he has not received a response from Dr. Đorđe Alempijević concerning an expert assessment of injuries sustained by citizens during a police intervention in Valjevo in August 2025. Pašalić's office had requested information on whether the Institute of Forensic Medicine had conducted such an assessment and to provide all available documentation.

I spoke with Pašalić by phone, and then sent him a written response by email, which the system blocked as spam.

However, Dr. Alempijević, a specialist in forensic medicine, has countered Pašalić's claim. He told N1 that he had a phone conversation with the Ombudsman on May 21, 2026, during which he provided information about his involvement. Alempijević also stated that he subsequently sent a written response via email, but it was blocked as spam by the system.

The Institute of Forensic Medicine informed the Ombudsman's Office that it did not participate in the assessment of injuries sustained by citizens in Valjevo during the specified event. No response was received from Dr. Alempijević.

According to media reports cited by Alempijević, he and a colleague examined 25 individuals who claim to be victims of police brutality during the Valjevo protests. He specifically noted that one man sustained at least 28 baton strikes, with bruising across his entire body, consistent with reports from the Valjevo hospital. The Institute of Forensic Medicine in Belgrade has reportedly informed the Ombudsman's office that it did not participate in the assessment.
