Dodgers Bolster Catcher Depth Amid Injuries with Multiple Trades

The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing a catcher crisis, with 25-year-old rookie Dalton Rushing being placed on the injured list due to an elbow strain. This move further depletes their catching depth, as star catcher Will Smith has been out for nearly two months with neck inflammation and is on the 60-day injured list.

To address the immediate need, the Dodgers have been active on trade deadline day. They acquired 28-year-old catcher Ben Rortvedt from the New York Mets in exchange for right-handed pitcher Chayce McDermott. Rortvedt, who previously played for the Dodgers in 2023, spent most of the current season in Triple-A. The team also acquired 29-year-old catcher Hunter Feduccia from the Tampa Bay Rays, sending outfielder Jack Suwinski and international bonus pool money in return. Feduccia has prior experience with the Dodgers, having been traded away last season.

Beyond the catching situation, the Dodgers also made a move to strengthen their pitching staff. They acquired 28-year-old left-handed pitcher Kris Bubic from the Kansas City Royals for 25-year-old right-handed pitcher Carlos Duran. However, Bubic is also currently on the 60-day injured list with a left forearm injury, sustained in mid-May. He had a 3-2 record with a 4.11 ERA in nine starts this season before his injury.

Rushing, in his 74 games this season, posted 12 home runs, 36 RBIs, a .253 batting average, and an .810 OPS. His absence, coupled with Smith's, leaves a significant gap that Rortvedt and Feduccia will need to fill.
