Dodgers Closer Edwin Díaz Reportedly Heading to Injured List With Neck Inflammation

Los Angeles Dodgers' star closer Edwin Díaz is facing a difficult season, marked by a staggering 11.85 earned run average. The 32-year-old pitcher is now reportedly sidelined with neck inflammation, with the team expected to place him on the injured list. This latest setback comes shortly after his return in late July from surgery to remove a loose body from his right elbow.

Díaz's performance since returning has been a cause for concern. In seven appearances in August, he recorded one win, two losses, and two saves, but also had three blown saves. His ERA for the month ballooned to 15.88, a stark contrast to the high expectations set when he signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Dodgers before the season.

Manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Díaz is experiencing inflammation in his right side of the neck and will undergo further medical evaluation. Roberts clarified that this new injury is unrelated to his previous elbow surgery. The team plans to call up 26-year-old right-handed pitcher Emmet Sheehan to fill Díaz's spot on the major league roster.

Overall this season, Díaz has pitched 13.2 innings across 16 games, accumulating a 2-2 record with 7 saves. However, he has surrendered 18 hits, including 3 home runs, resulting in a .385 batting average against him and a 2.56 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched).
