Does ChatGPT monitor our phones, messages and cameras? A detailed report answers the questions

ChatGPT’s ability to handle voice, images, files and connected services has prompted a basic privacy question: can it monitor a phone without its owner knowing? The answer is not simply yes or no. The key distinction is between data a user provides or authorizes the app to access and secret, comprehensive surveillance of the device.

OpenAI’s privacy policy and help documents say the company collects some information linked to use of its services. Depending on the features a person uses, ChatGPT can handle text prompts, files, images, audio, video and data from connected services. OpenAI also processes technical and usage information connected with operating its services.

That does not mean the application can inspect everything on a phone. Information such as the device type, operating system or some connection details differs fundamentally from reading private messages, viewing gallery photos or keeping the microphone active at all times.

Microphone access is required on phones when a user starts a Voice conversation and the app requests permission. During the conversation, users can mute or reactivate the microphone and end the session through the feature’s controls. ChatGPT can therefore process a user’s voice, but in the context of a voice function designed to hear and answer that user.

OpenAI also offers background conversations, allowing a Voice session to continue while the user uses other applications or while the phone screen is locked, if the setting has been enabled. The session ends when the user stops it, force-closes the app, or reaches a usage or maximum session limit. This can make the phone appear to be listening while locked, although the explanation given is that a previously started voice conversation is continuing under the user’s chosen setting.
