Dog Rescued After Eating Marijuana on Scotland's Highest Mountain

A routine hike on Ben Nevis, Scotland's highest peak, turned into an unusual rescue mission when a black Labrador named Tokyo ingested what veterinarians believe was discarded marijuana. The five-year-old dog suddenly became weak, lost the use of her hind legs, and drifted in and out of consciousness during the descent with her owner, Christina Bluhme.

Unable to walk, Tokyo required assistance from the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team. Volunteers carried the 32-kilogram dog down the mountain on a stretcher before she was taken to a veterinary clinic. She received supportive treatment, including activated charcoal, and fully recovered within 24 hours.

Veterinarians at Crown Vets in Fort William diagnosed Tokyo with cannabis toxicity, suspecting she consumed discarded marijuana along the hiking trail. Dogs are particularly sensitive to THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, and even small amounts can cause severe symptoms. While most dogs recover with prompt treatment, severe cases can be life-threatening.

Bluhme expressed gratitude to the rescue team and veterinary staff. She also urged hikers to practice responsible waste disposal in outdoor areas to prevent harm to animals. Tokyo's unexpected adventure concluded happily, highlighting the importance of both rescue services and responsible outdoor behavior.
