Dominican Republic expels Cuban diplomats, sparking row

The Dominican Republic has taken the unusual step of demanding the withdrawal of nine Cuban diplomats and their families, creating a diplomatic rift between the two Caribbean nations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mirex) has not disclosed the specific reasons behind this significant reduction of the Cuban mission in Santo Domingo.

Mirex stated that the action complies with international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The ministry indicated it would handle the matter discreetly through established channels to preserve bilateral relations. While the Vienna Convention allows a host country to declare diplomats persona non grata without explanation, the Dominican Republic opted for a less confrontational term, requesting a "withdrawal" rather than expulsion.

Diplomatic expulsions or withdrawals typically stem from inappropriate personal conduct, interference in internal affairs, or espionage activities. Diplomats are expected to respect the laws of their host country and refrain from intervening in its domestic matters, as outlined in Article 41 of the Vienna Convention. Cuba has vehemently rejected the Dominican Republic's decision, denouncing it in the strongest possible terms.
