Dominican Republic issues green alert for heavy rains in several provinces

The Dominican Republic's Center for Emergency Operations (COE) has placed nine provinces and the National District on a green alert, anticipating heavy rainfall and potential flooding. This measure highlights the country's vulnerability to weather-related emergencies and the proactive steps taken by authorities to mitigate risks.

The measure was adopted due to possible overflows of rivers, streams, and ravines, as well as sudden or urban floods.

The alert stems from a combination of a lingering tropical wave and an approaching trough, which meteorologists predict will cause moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across various regions. While some areas might experience isolated showers earlier in the day, the afternoon and early evening are expected to bring the most significant precipitation, particularly in the central and northern parts of the country.

Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas, especially those living near rivers, streams, and ravines, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The COE also issued specific guidance for maritime activities, advising operators of small and fragile vessels to navigate with extreme caution along the southwestern Caribbean coast and to refrain from venturing into rough seas due to abnormal winds and wave conditions. Normal maritime conditions are expected elsewhere along the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts.
