Dominican Republic schools adopt transparent backpacks to curb violence

Schools in the Dominican Republic are grappling with a surge in student violence, prompting authorities to implement new security measures. In Barahona, the Instituto Tecnológico Federico Henríquez y Carvajal will mandate transparent backpacks for the 2026-2027 academic year. This decision follows random searches that uncovered weapons, vapes, and alcohol among students.

A 2025 study from the University of Southern California's Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Threats and Emergencies indicated that students and staff often find backpack regulations invasive, fostering a sense of surveillance rather than security. Two-thirds of students surveyed by USC felt these rules infringed on their privacy.
