Dominican Republic sees leptospirosis cases drop, but annual total surges

The Dominican Republic is observing a downward trend in leptospirosis cases in recent weeks, according to the Ministry of Public Health's bulletin for Epidemiological Week 30 of 2026. Only two confirmed cases were reported during that week, both originating from Santo Domingo province. However, this recent decrease contrasts sharply with the cumulative figures for the year.

As of SE-30 in 2026, the country has confirmed 260 leptospirosis cases. This marks a substantial increase compared to the 30 confirmed cases reported by SE-30 in 2025, out of 274 suspected cases. The cumulative confirmed cases have surged by approximately 766.7%, representing an additional 230 cases.

In response to the elevated cumulative numbers, health authorities are reinforcing preventive measures. They emphasize the importance of hygiene, avoiding contact with potentially contaminated water, and promptly seeking medical care for symptoms like fever and calf pain. The Ministry of Public Health assures the public that continuous prevention and epidemiological surveillance are in place to ensure early detection and control the disease's spread.
