Dominican Republic volleyball team advances to Olympic qualifier final

The Dominican Republic's "Reinas del Caribe" volleyball team showcased remarkable character and a strong comeback ability to defeat Cuba 3-1, advancing to a crucial match for a direct qualification spot in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The team will face Canada in the final qualifier.

The match began unfavorably for the Dominicans, as Cuba secured the first set 25-20 by effectively exploiting spaces and maintaining pressure on the Dominican offense. However, losing the initial set did not deter the "Reinas del Caribe." They quickly found their rhythm and shifted the momentum.

Starting from the second set, Dominican power at the net became a decisive factor. Their blocking strategy effectively neutralized many of Cuba's attacks, leading to a 25-19 win in the second set. This resurgence leveled the match and boosted the Dominican team's confidence, allowing them to dominate the subsequent sets.

Brayelin Martínez was the top scorer for the Dominican Republic with 21 points, including 15 attacks, five blocks, and one service ace. Yonkaira Peña contributed 16 points, while Gaila González and Jineiry Martínez added 12 points each. The team's collective superiority in attack (54-46), blocking (13-9), and service (7-0) was evident throughout the match.
