Nelson's illustrious career spanned over three decades. He began as a player, spending 11 of his 14 seasons with the Boston Celtics, where he secured five NBA titles. After retiring as a player, he transitioned to coaching, leading four teams including the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks. He retired from coaching in 2010 as the NBA's winningest coach.

Nelson also notably drafted Stephen Curry during his tenure with the Golden State Warriors, contributing to their eventual dynasty. He revealed a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2000.
