Don’t seek shelter under telecom masts during storms, NSCDC warns Kano residents

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kano State has initiated a statewide public awareness campaign focused on the safety of telecommunication masts and infrastructure during the rainy season. The campaign also aims to educate residents on the importance of protecting these critical national assets.

Mohammed Agalama, the NSCDC State Commandant, issued a stern warning against tampering with telecommunication masts, underground cables, and power installations. He highlighted that such actions constitute economic sabotage and pose significant risks to public safety. Agalama noted that severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds, can create hazardous situations around telecommunication facilities.

Telecommunication infrastructure remains a critical national asset that supports communication, security operations, emergency response, banking services, and economic activities.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and avoid seeking shelter under telecommunication masts during storms. They are also encouraged to promptly report any damaged or suspicious installations to the nearest NSCDC office or relevant authorities. Agalama emphasized that telecommunication infrastructure is vital for communication, security operations, emergency response, banking, and economic activities, underscoring the collective responsibility to safeguard these facilities.

The NSCDC has directed all 44 divisional officers across Kano State to engage traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, youth groups, schools, and religious institutions to disseminate this awareness campaign. The corps reiterated its commitment to protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, warning that vandals will be arrested and prosecuted. The public is encouraged to cooperate by providing timely information to prevent vandalism and ensure uninterrupted telecommunication services.
