Donald Trump Hails AfD Election Victory in Saxony-Anhalt

Donald Trump celebrated the AfD’s victory in Saxony-Anhalt as “a really big night” and presented it as a voter response to Germany’s migration policy.

“Wow! The populist party in Germany just had a really big night,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He said voters would no longer accept the “absolutely terrible immigration rules and regulations that have caused Germany great harm.” Borrowing from “Make America Great Again,” he added the Germany-focused acronym “MGGA.”

Prominent figures in Trump’s MAGA movement quickly joined the celebration. Entrepreneur Elon Musk wrote “Well done!” in response to a post by AfD co-leader Alice Weidel congratulating the party’s lead candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, on the result. Musk had previously promoted the AfD while serving as a close adviser to the U.S. president.

Richard Grenell, the former U.S. ambassador stationed in Berlin, also congratulated the party. “A great victory and a new day in Germany,” he wrote on social media. Grenell had drawn controversy during his diplomatic posting because of several polarizing statements.

The AfD has repeatedly sought ties with Trump and his MAGA movement. Weidel called Trump a role model after his election victory last year, and AfD representatives traveled to the United States for his inauguration. Research by Die Zeit and others found that several AfD members of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament traveled to a MAGA event in New York in December.
