Donzelli: “Now we need a budget for the middle class and producers. The left is rooting against Italy”

Giovanni Donzelli says Giorgia Meloni’s government is not preparing for an early election. Its aim, he insists, is to reach the end of the legislature in November 2027, barring an unwanted parliamentary setback or another political shock.

Speaking after a Brothers of Italy rally in Bari, the party’s organizational chief said Meloni’s declaration that she would not give up was directed at the left. He argued that the government and the centre-right now enjoy greater support than they did at the start of the legislature, despite persistent attacks and predictions that the government would not last.

Donzelli also rejected speculation about the absence of Deputy Prime Ministers Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini from the event. He said the rally had been organized by Brothers of Italy to celebrate the entire centre-right, and that those who could not attend were working or joined remotely. He described the gathering as a success that contradicted claims that the government was in crisis and had lost public support.

On the 2027 budget, Donzelli said his party would create the conditions for rapid approval and would not “poison the wells.” He presented the government’s previous budgets as a sequence of measures: ending the citizenship income, restructuring tax rates, supporting employment through tax-wedge cuts and a preferential corporate tax regime, and introducing a family-based income indicator and birth support. The next budget, he said, would help the middle class and productive sectors and complete the centre-right’s programme. He declined to reveal the measures.

Donzelli dismissed opposition leader Elly Schlein’s description of Italy as having zero growth. He pointed to positive, if weak, growth, a low spread and cheaper public debt, and said foreign media had reported that Italy had overtaken France in per-capita wealth. Asked about industrial production and dismissal letters arriving in Taranto during the Bari celebration, he said the government had always addressed the former Ilva emergency and blamed decades of irresponsibility rather than the current administration.
