Douglass sets 50m freestyle world record at Pan Pacific

American swimmer Kate Douglass has reclaimed the women's 50-meter freestyle world record, setting a blistering pace of 23.49 seconds during the preliminaries at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California.

This marks another chapter in the ongoing record battle between Douglass and her training partner and former University of Virginia teammate, Gretchen Walsh. Walsh had previously set the record at 23.55 seconds on June 28. In Saturday's preliminaries, Walsh clocked the second-fastest time at 23.78 seconds, setting the stage for an exciting final.

Douglass's achievements extend beyond individual events. She was also part of the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay team that broke a world record on the opening night of the championships. Alongside Walsh, Van Mathias, and Will Modglin, Douglass showcased her versatility and contribution to team success.

The Pan Pacific Swimming Championships are considered a significant early benchmark for swimmers preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Douglass, a five-time Olympic medalist, is using this competition to gauge her progress and performance ahead of the major international event.
