DPP Candidate Targets Wang Hui-mei's Hometown with Children's Theater Event

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for Changhua County Magistrate, Chen Su-yue, is set to host a performance by the popular Paper Windmill Theatre in Lugang on September 4. This strategic move aims to capture votes in the northern Changhua electoral district, an area where Chen has historically focused her efforts in southern Changhua.

The event is deliberately scheduled for the final day of candidate registration for the upcoming elections. Chen's campaign spokesperson, Liu Shan-ling, stated that Chen will officially register her candidacy on September 2, with the Lugang performance marking her first major post-registration event. The choice of Lugang, the hometown of incumbent Magistrate Wang Hui-mei, is seen as a direct challenge to Wang's established support base.

Liu explained that the venue in Lugang was selected primarily for its suitability, citing the town's stadium facilities. This contrasts with recent family-oriented activities held in Changhua City. The campaign hopes that by hosting such events, they can resonate with younger voters and address the critical issue of the declining birthrate, for which Chen has proposed child welfare policies.

Political observers note that holding the children's theater event on the last day of registration in Wang's home turf is a clear attempt to court young voters. Wang Hui-mei has won decisively in Lugang in her previous two mayoral elections. Chen's campaign is signaling its intent to contest these votes directly and potentially shift the political landscape in Lugang, which has been a stronghold for the Kuomintang (KMT) in county magistrate races for the past eight years.
