DPP seeks party nomination for Zhubei mayor, increasing candidates to 5

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Taiwan's Hsinchu County is gearing up for the 2026 local elections, anticipating a significant increase in its candidate pool, potentially doubling the number of contenders. The party views the upcoming elections as a critical battleground, aiming to bolster its presence across the region.

Specifically for the mayoral race in Zhubei City, the DPP has expanded its potential nominee list from three to five individuals. This group includes current county councilors, academics, a businessman, a central government official, and a tech entrepreneur. The party plans to select its candidate through a nomination process, with a decision expected after further deliberation.

DPP Hsinchu County Chairman Su Jen-chien highlighted that the party's strategy involves leveraging the "mother hen" effect of the county magistrate candidate, Cheng Chao-fang, to foster unity and encourage local participation. The expansion of candidates is not limited to the Zhubei mayoral race but also includes nominations for county council seats in various townships and for town representatives.

The party currently has 10 county councilors and 5 town representatives in Hsinchu County. With the influx of new talent, the DPP estimates its nomination numbers could double compared to the previous election cycle. This proactive approach aims to strengthen the party's position and potentially achieve a political reversal in Hsinchu County, building on the governance experience in Zhubei City.
