DR Congo seal place in World Cup knockouts with comeback win over Uzbekistan

The Democratic Republic of Congo has clinched a place in the World Cup knockout stage, marking a significant return to the tournament after a 52-year absence. They achieved this by staging a dramatic 3-1 comeback victory against Uzbekistan in their final Group K match.

Uzbekistan initially took the lead in the 10th minute through their captain, Eldor Shomurodov. However, the Congolese team, seemingly affected by the pressure of expectation, found their lifeline in the second half. Yoane Wissa converted a crucial penalty to level the score.

Substitute Fiston Mayele then put DR Congo ahead with a skillful flick 12 minutes from time. Wissa sealed the victory in added time with his second goal, completing a memorable comeback. With this win, DR Congo finished with four points, securing one of the eight best third-place spots available.

They are now set to face England in the round of 32, with the match scheduled to take place back in Atlanta on Wednesday. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, exits the tournament without securing any points in their World Cup debut.
