Driver Appeals 5-Year Sentence in Fatal Drunk Driving Case Involving Japanese Tourists

A driver, who was sentenced to five years in prison for fatally striking a Japanese tourist mother and daughter while driving under the influence, has appealed the ruling. Mr. Seo, facing charges including causing death by dangerous driving, submitted his appeal to the Seoul Central District Court.

The court had previously handed down the five-year sentence on December 12, also ordering the confiscation of the Tesla vehicle involved in the incident. Presiding Judge Lee Seong-yeol acknowledged the evidence, including CCTV footage and the defendant's confession, confirming guilt.

The judge highlighted the tragic circumstances, stating that the victims were crossing the street on a pedestrian signal when they were hit. The vehicle not only struck the mother and daughter but also veered onto a sidewalk and into a flowerbed. The court emphasized the irreversible consequences, including the mother's death and a severe six-week injury to her daughter, deeming severe punishment unavoidable.
