Driver Dead, 89 Injured in Major Train Collision Near Bedford

A catastrophic train crash near Bedford has resulted in the death of a train driver and left 89 people injured, with 11 sustaining very serious injuries. The collision involved two southbound East Midlands Railway (EMR) services traveling towards London St Pancras on Friday afternoon. British Transport Police have declared the incident a major event as emergency services responded to the scene just south of Elstow.

Passengers described a terrifying experience, with one, Dr. Peter Knapp, who was in the front carriage, likening the impact to a 'bomb explosion.' He recounted seeing debris everywhere, bloodied faces, and broken limbs amidst smoke. Another passenger, Shola Mene, heard a 'big bang' and witnessed people being thrown from their seats, with one individual hitting her husband. She noted a significant amount of blood and facial injuries among passengers.

When I got up, I saw people's bloodied faces and people's legs looked broken and there was smoke everywhere.

The RMT union confirmed the tragic death of the train driver, who was also a former union representative, expressing devastation. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Aerial footage shows the two damaged trains, with most carriages on the tracks, but at least one shunted off. The involved trains were the 16:40 EMR service from Corby and the 15:50 service from Nottingham. Teresa Itabor, traveling to London for her birthday, described a massive bang shortly after leaving Bedford station, hitting her head on the seat in front and seeing bloodied passengers on the floor.
