Drone war: Moscow reports attacks by 60 drones, refinery hit

Moscow's air defense systems intercepted approximately 60 Ukrainian drones early on June 16, 2026, according to the city's mayor, Sergey Sobyanin. One drone managed to strike a facility at a Moscow oil refinery, though no casualties were reported. Emergency services are currently clearing debris from downed drones across the capital.

The drone attacks led to temporary flight restrictions at Moscow's four major airports: Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, Sheremetyevo, and Vnukovo. These disruptions add to the travel chaos experienced by Russians, particularly during holiday periods, with frequent flight cancellations and delays becoming common.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported intercepting a total of 172 drones over various regions. Meanwhile, in southern Russia, an oil storage facility in Poltavskaya, Krasnodar region, was hit and caught fire. Authorities closed a local road due to the incident, and unverified videos circulating online showed a large plume of smoke rising from the site.

These strikes on Russia's oil industry are part of Ukraine's strategy to disrupt the nation's military supply chain and cripple energy exports, which are a significant source of revenue for the Kremlin's war effort. Attacks on refineries and fuel depots have already caused fuel shortages and price increases in several areas.
