Drowsy driving caused Seoul dump truck collision injuring two

Authorities have identified driver fatigue as the cause of a multi-vehicle dump truck accident in Seoul's Nowon District that injured two people. The driver, a man in his 60s, is expected to be handed over to prosecutors on charges of violating traffic laws.

The incident occurred on June 29th around 7:01 AM at the Hwarangdae intersection. The dump truck driver, who was proceeding straight through the intersection, ran a red light and collided with two other dump trucks that were turning left. The impact resulted in injuries to the drivers of the two vehicles he struck.

Initially, the driver claimed that his vehicle's brakes had malfunctioned. However, an investigation by the National Forensic Service found no defects in the truck's braking system. Evidence indicated that the air pressure to the brakes was normal, all wheel braking functions were operational, and crucially, there were no signs of braking at the time of the accident.

During police questioning, the driver reportedly admitted to dozing off at the wheel. He stated that he had not slept sufficiently the previous night before starting his early morning shift. The admission of falling asleep behind the wheel contradicts his initial claim of mechanical failure and clarifies the cause of the serious collision.
