Drug-fueled driver kills one sister, critically injures another in New Taipei City

A horrific incident in New Taipei City has left one sister dead and another critically injured after a driver, allegedly under the influence of drugs, plowed into them. The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Jingping Road and Dayong Street in Zhonghe District. Security footage captured the suspect's vehicle first striking a curb before reversing erratically and then accelerating forward, hitting the two sisters who were on a scooter in a waiting area.

The footage shows the vehicle running over the sisters for two seconds before accelerating again and swerving to the right. The shocking event caused panic among other road users, with witnesses heard screaming and questioning the driver's state. A mother and child crossing the street nearby narrowly escaped harm by quickly moving away with the child.

The driver, identified as Wang, reportedly exited the vehicle after it malfunctioned. He was then subdued by two courageous citizens who feared he might flee. Other bystanders used traffic cones borrowed from a nearby store to secure the accident scene. Police arrived to find Wang in a disoriented state, trembling, and speaking incoherently. A rapid drug test on his saliva was positive for etomidate, and a "zombie smoke bomb" was found in his pocket. He was arrested on the spot.

The elder sister sustained broken ribs and a fractured nose, along with multiple abrasions. She underwent emergency surgery and is currently in the intensive care unit, with her condition stabilized. The younger sister suffered severe trauma and, despite initially being conscious upon arrival at the hospital, later lost vital signs due to her critical injuries. Her family made the difficult decision to withdraw life support, and she was pronounced dead. Prosecutors are scheduled to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
