Druivenstreek municipalities seek grape ambassadors amid candidate hesitation

The municipalities within the Druivenstreek (Grape Region) are once again searching for new 'grape ambassadors' to represent the area and its renowned grapes for a two-year term. This role involves representing the region at various events, openings, and occasions.

It is truly a crazy experience, but you can still choose what you do.

While a selection process precedes the appointment, the tasks involved appear to be a significant deterrent for potential participants. However, current ambassadors Robin and Elfi, who have served for the past two years, describe the experience as "crazy" but emphasize that participants can still choose their level of involvement. Elfi Van den Berghe, who was elected ambassador in August 2024, shared her positive reflections on the past two years.

It is truly an adventure from beginning to end.

Van den Berghe recounted attending numerous events across the region, participating in activities like climbing a defense wall, and being present at the Brabantse Pijl cycling race, where she presented flowers to the third-place finisher. She described the experience as an "adventure from beginning to end." Despite the perceived workload, she advises hesitant individuals to apply, stating, "Just do it. It is truly a blissful experience."

Many people are put off by the workload, but it's really not that bad.

She acknowledged that the title comes with certain obligations, such as expected attendance at some events. However, she noted that many of these events were places she would have attended anyway. Ambassadors can also extend their time at events and have the flexibility to choose their activities. Working as a pair also allows for the division of tasks. Applications are open until mid-August, and the new ambassadors will be revealed during the upcoming Grape Festival.
