Drunk driver hits cyclist in Belgrade, flees scene

Belgrade police have detained a 24-year-old man, identified as A.M., on suspicion of causing a traffic accident while intoxicated and then fleeing the scene. The incident involved a collision with a citizen of Azerbaijan who was riding an electric bicycle in the Zemun district of Belgrade.

The accident reportedly took place on August 16. According to the Third Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, A.M. is accused of hitting the victim while operating a vehicle and subsequently leaving the scene without offering any assistance to the injured cyclist.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly invoked his right to remain silent and did not provide a statement regarding the circumstances of the alleged offenses. He faces charges related to serious offenses against public safety and failure to provide aid to an injured person in a traffic accident.

Prosecutors have requested pretrial detention for A.M. The request is based on concerns that the suspect might commit similar offenses in the near future and poses a flight risk. The court will now consider the prosecution's motion for detention.
