Dual-color temperature streetlights reduce night-time injury accidents in Kinmen by 40%

Kinmen County is reporting a significant improvement in night-time road safety following an eight-month trial of a novel "dual-color temperature streetlight" system. The initiative, implemented at 13 key intersections, has led to a remarkable 40% decrease in night-time injury accidents.

The Kinmen County Public Works Office explained that the system aims to enhance safety by using distinct light colors to alert drivers. Straight road sections are illuminated with a warm color temperature, while critical intersections utilize a high color temperature. This contrast is designed to increase driver vigilance as they approach intersections.

Comparing accident data from the eight months before and after the implementation, the office found that night-time injury accidents (between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.) dropped from 10 to 6. Property damage accidents also saw a decrease, falling from 9 to 7. Officials collaborated with the Kinmen County Police Bureau and the Tourism Department to assess the effectiveness of the lighting from a driver's perspective, examining intersection visibility and surrounding environmental factors.

Hu Chia-jui, director of the Public Works Office, emphasized that the goal is not merely to increase brightness but to ensure "the right places are lit, and the places that need attention are seen." While acknowledging that accident causes are complex, he noted the positive impact of the color temperature variations in improving intersection recognition and overall night-time road safety. The county is now planning a second phase to expand the application of this lighting technology.
