Dubrovnik triathlete Željko Cota wins gold in Austria and impresses Croatian fans

Željko Cota crossed the finish line in Zell am See-Kaprun with the fastest time of any amateur competitor, delivering another major international victory for Dubrovnik and Croatia. The Dubrovnik triathlete completed the Austrian Ironman 70.3 race in 4:16:50 and won the overall Age Group classification.

Cota also dominated the 25-to-29 age group, holding the lead from the start to the finish. He beat 321 competitors in that category. Croatian fans in Austria followed his performance with pride, while the victory drew attention in Dubrovnik and across Croatia.

The race included 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling and a 21.1-kilometer run. Among all 1,514 male competitors, including professionals, Cota finished 37th. His overall placing was 38th among 2,064 triathletes from around the world.

The article highlights that Cota did not start alongside the professionals. Age Group athletes began separately, while the professionals raced in less crowded conditions. Two more major events await him this season: the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice and the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. He is set to be the only Croatian competing at both championships this year.
