Düsseldorf Court Sentences 17-Year-Old to Seven Years for Mother's Killing

A 17-year-old Ukrainian has been sentenced to seven years in youth detention for the manslaughter of his mother in Düsseldorf. The court at the Düsseldorf Regional Court delivered the verdict for the crime, which occurred on New Year's Eve. At the time of the incident, the perpetrator was 16 years old.

The victim, a 49-year-old mother of five, was reportedly first strangled by her son before being placed unconscious into a bathtub filled with water. She succumbed to her injuries two days later in the hospital. Witnesses had alerted the police after observing a violent altercation in the apartment building on the day of the incident, leading to the teenager's arrest during a large-scale operation.

Due to youth protection regulations, the trial was conducted behind closed doors, and the court withheld details regarding the background or motive behind the killing. Messages from the father to the son, expressing sorrow that the children would soon be without parents, reportedly played a role in the proceedings. The court did not confirm whether the sentence is legally binding, citing the same youth protection concerns.
