Dutch Cabinet Talks 'Stuck Fast,' Pro Leader Says

Coalition talks between the Dutch cabinet and the largest opposition party, Pro, remain "stuck fast," according to Pro leader Jesse Klaver. Following new discussions on Monday, Klaver reported no progress, stating, "We haven't come a step closer today."

The cabinet, a minority government, is seeking support for its upcoming budget from various opposition parties before a Friday deadline. Klaver criticized the government's focus on potential cuts to social security, which he argues will impact the unemployed and those who become disabled. "They seem to still be worried about the rich in the Netherlands, and we are worried about people who become disabled or lose their jobs – and the cabinet wants to cut back on them," Klaver said.

Pro has indicated it is willing to act as a "responsible opposition" and has previously supported nitrogen reduction plans. However, they insist that announced austerity measures for social security must be completely withdrawn. Klaver described the cabinet's strategy as "mega-risky," suggesting they are "betting on multiple horses and trying to keep everyone happy," which could leave them isolated.

With Pro's support, the cabinet could secure a majority in the House of Representatives and would only need two more seats in the Senate.
