Dutch PM Rob Jetten sails on Canal Pride Amsterdam: 'Love is love, be yourself'

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten described his participation in Amsterdam's Canal Pride as a "goosebumps moment," joining thousands along the canals for the colorful boat parade. Beyond the celebration, Jetten used the occasion to reflect on the deeper message of Pride events, stating, "We must show that we all stand up and speak out when we see homophobia."

Jetten, the Netherlands' first openly gay prime minister, emphasized that WorldPride is more than just a party. "It is important that we celebrate this. I find it special to be able to be here," he said. He hopes his presence will inspire young people who may be struggling with their identity. "I especially hope that this is an inspiration for young people who are standing here on the side or are struggling with themselves at home."

He urged young people who feel they don't fit into certain boxes to know that much is possible. "You can lead a very good life and make the best of it. If we can play a role model in that together, that's great." Jetten's participation comes at a time of increasing concern for the LGBTQIA+ community's safety, following a recent attack at Berlin Pride and ongoing issues of discrimination and online harassment.

"That is precisely why it is important that people are visible today," Jetten stated. "We must show that we can celebrate WorldPride in Amsterdam in such a wonderful way, but also that we all stand up and speak out when we see homophobia." He added that governments must also play a role, both domestically and by supporting human rights activists abroad. Jetten affirmed his commitment to being open about his personal life, including his engagement to Nicolas, stating, "We are very proud. We are very much in love. The whole world can know that."
