Dutch publisher halts newspaper deliveries to islands over service changes

The Dutch publisher Mediahuis has announced it will cease delivering its newspapers, including NRC, to the islands of Schiermonnikoog and Vlieland from July 1. This decision stems from PostNL's nationwide halt to 24-hour delivery services and its suspension of deliveries on Saturdays and Mondays to these specific islands.

The implications of this change are significant for island residents who subscribe to paper editions. Without the new delivery schedule, newspapers that would normally arrive on Friday and Saturday might not reach subscribers until Tuesday. This disruption has prompted concern among the island communities.

However, the islands have demonstrated resilience and ingenuity. Local transport companies, like Ridder & de Vries, which already handle package and letter delivery for PostNL, are stepping in to ensure newspapers continue to reach readers. Bookstores and post offices on the islands are also playing a role in distributing the papers.

Despite the shift away from print subscriptions, a notable portion of the islanders, particularly on Schiermonnikoog, still rely on physical newspapers. Local businesses, such as the Kolstein bookstore, report strong sales of various titles, especially during peak tourist season, indicating a continued demand for print media among both residents and visitors.
