Earthquake Devastates Colombia's Chocó Region, Killing at Least 14, Including Mayor's Son

A devastating earthquake has struck Colombia's Chocó region, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least 14 lives, including that of six-year-old Mateo Valencia Valencia. The child was on his way to school when the powerful tremor hit, trapping him and a family friend in debris. Both were found deceased.

Mateo was the son of the mayor of Bahía Solano, Jairson Leonel Valencia Pinilla, and the social manager Yirley Valencia, adding to the profound grief felt by the community. A prayer service was held to support the grieving families.

We were leaving the house when the earthquake occurred. Unfortunately, both were found deceased on the stairs. We are very dismayed.

The earthquake, with an epicenter in Chocó, has also resulted in at least 138 injuries, with many receiving care at the San Francisco de Asís Hospital, which itself sustained damage. Reports indicate that approximately 2,791 homes and public buildings have suffered material damage across the department.

Despite communication challenges due to intermittent power and the fear of aftershocks, the community of Chocó has rallied together. Residents are actively clearing rubble and offering shelter and food to their neighbors who have lost their homes, showcasing a strong sense of solidarity in the face of tragedy.
