Earthquake near Naples causes minor damage, power outages

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake shook the Campi Flegrei region near Naples, southern Italy, on Friday evening, leading to power outages and minor damage to buildings. The tremor, recorded at 7:46 p.m. local time, had its epicenter about three kilometers deep, according to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

Firefighters reported minor damage in Naples and surrounding areas but no requests for rescue. Train and metro services were temporarily halted as a precautionary measure, local authorities stated. Italian media described it as one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the location.

The densely populated Campi Flegrei area has experienced increasing seismic activity in recent years, prompting intensified government monitoring. While minor tremors are common, stronger quakes raise concerns about a potential repeat of the 1980s crisis, which disrupted daily life and forced thousands to evacuate.
