Eastern Washington fires destroy 600 structures, force 60,000 to evacuate

Wildfires have ravaged eastern Washington state, prompting the evacuation of 60,000 residents from the Spokane area and leaving a trail of destruction that includes at least 600 homes, businesses, and other structures. The fires, concentrated in and around Spokane, the state's second-largest city, have consumed about 8.2 square miles.

These blazes are part of a larger crisis across the western United States, where numerous fires are stretching the capabilities of federal, state, and local firefighting agencies. Across Washington state, approximately 390 square miles have burned, with some fires, particularly those near Spokane, remaining uncontained. The evacuations in Spokane included patients from the US Veterans Affairs hospital, highlighting the widespread impact.

The forecast for the region predicts sunny and dry conditions, with temperatures expected to exceed 90°F (32°C) by Wednesday. Authorities have attributed the cause of this fire to lightning.

Concerns about air quality have prompted the National Weather Service to issue warnings for eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, western and central Idaho, and western Montana. Red flag fire warnings have been issued for parts of Utah, Montana, and western Nebraska, while extreme heat warnings are in effect for southern Arizona, California, and Nevada, and northern Montana. Wind gusts of 35-45 mph were expected in Spokane, further complicating firefighting efforts. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency on Saturday, and the National Weather Service issued a "particularly dangerous situation" red flag alert for eastern Washington.
