Ebola cases in Congo surpass 3,500 amid rapid spread

The Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading rapidly, with over 3,532 confirmed infections and 1,556 recorded deaths. This current epidemic has surpassed the severity of the country's previous largest Ebola outbreak, which occurred between 2018 and 2020. Just last week, the number of confirmed cases stood at 3,075, indicating a swift escalation in infections.

Authorities report a current fatality rate of 44 percent, meaning nearly half of all confirmed cases have been fatal. Experts believe the actual number of infections is likely much higher, with many cases going undetected or unreported. It is suspected that the virus may have been circulating for months before the outbreak was officially declared on May 15th.

This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo and affects five provinces in the country's east, a region long affected by conflict and violence. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Ebola is highly contagious and can be transmitted through bodily fluids, leading to symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, internal and external bleeding, and organ failure.
