Ebola epidemic spreads in eastern Congo, over 200 suspected deaths reported

The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo is escalating, with the Congolese government reporting 867 suspected cases and 204 deaths since the outbreak began. This marks a significant increase from the previous day, with over 100 new infections and more than 30 additional fatalities.

While 91 infections have been confirmed in the lab, resulting in 10 deaths, the World Health Organization believes the actual numbers are considerably higher. The outbreak went unnoticed for weeks, leading to underreporting of cases. Neighboring Uganda has reported five confirmed cases linked to the eastern Congo outbreak.

The situation is particularly challenging due to the involvement of the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. This strain does not have an existing vaccine or a specific therapy, making containment and treatment more difficult. The outbreak, which started in the northeastern Ituri province bordering Uganda and South Sudan, is a stark reminder of the devastating Ebola epidemic in West Africa from 2014-2015 that claimed over 11,000 lives.
