Ebola Epidemic Spreads to Sixth Province in Congo; Declared Deadliest in History

The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is spreading at an alarming rate, reaching a sixth province, Bajo Uelé, in the northern part of the country. Jean Kaseya, director of the African Union's health agency (Africa CDC), confirmed the expansion, highlighting the unprecedented speed of the outbreak.

The DRC declared its 17th Ebola epidemic on May 15. It is already being described as the most significant in the country's history and is rapidly becoming the deadliest. Previously, the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo were affected. The addition of Bajo Uelé, which borders the Central African Republic, signifies a concerning geographical spread.

A death was recorded in Bajo Uelé from Ebola, attributed to an individual who had traveled from the Haut-Uélé province. This latest fatality contributes to the grim toll of the current epidemic. In just three months since its declaration, the outbreak has resulted in over 2,128 deaths from 4,566 confirmed cases, according to official figures.

This current outbreak surpasses the previous deadliest one in the DRC, which occurred between 2018 and 2020 and caused approximately 2,300 deaths among 3,500 recorded cases. The epidemic originated in the Ituri province and has since spread across northeastern and eastern regions, many of which are densely populated and suffer from fragile state presence and underdeveloped health infrastructure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed optimism on Wednesday, stating its expectation to reverse the epidemic's upward trend within three months. Ebola, a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted through bodily fluids, has caused over 15,000 deaths across Africa in the past 50 years, underscoring the persistent threat it poses to the continent.
