Ebonyi PDP accuses governor of plot to revoke secretariat's C-of-O, alleges plot to weaken opposition

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru is accused by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of plotting to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy for the party's state secretariat in Abakaliki. The PDP alleges this move is intended to suppress opposition politics as the 2027 general elections approach.

The opposition party stated that security agencies were used last week to remove its members from the secretariat when they attempted to clean the premises before party primaries. The PDP has drawn the attention of security agencies, the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the diplomatic community, and the public to what it calls "machinations to stifle democracy in Ebonyi State and, by extension, Nigeria."

According to the PDP's statement, the state government has a history of using public resources to silence dissenting voices, particularly opposition parties. The party reminded Governor Nwifuru that he rose politically through the PDP, having served as a member and Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly under the party. "It is unfortunate that Governor Nwifuru seems to want to become the proverbial river that forgot its source," the statement read.

The PDP has vowed not to be intimidated and pledged to use all constitutional and legal avenues to protect the rights of the party, its members, and the people of Ebonyi State. The party urged President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, the National Security Adviser, and INEC to intervene to protect democratic values.
