A Dhaka court has granted bail to economist Prof Abul Barkat in connection with a murder case stemming from the July uprising. The decision by Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman means there is no longer a legal impediment to his release from jail, according to his defense lawyer.

This development follows a previous denial of bail by another Dhaka court on Monday. Prof Barkat was arrested as a suspect in the case related to the killing of trader Abdul Wadud, following an application from the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The arrest occurred shortly after he was taken into custody on July 10 last year.

Prof Barkat, who previously served as president of the Bangladesh Economic Association and is a faculty member at Dhaka University, has been incarcerated since his arrest in a separate corruption case. That case, filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, involves alleged embezzlement of Tk 297 crore through AnonTex Group. He was granted bail in this corruption case by the High Court on May 11, an order that was upheld by the Supreme Court on May 21.
