Morgan's post came in the wake of England's elimination from the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina defeated the European side. The journalist expressed hope that Spain would "crush" Argentina as badly as Argentina "crushed" England in the Falklands. He also referred to the Argentine players as "classless idiots" and included an image of players with the Argentine flag over the Falkland Islands.

Caputo swiftly retorted, stating that while Argentina might win or lose its next match, Argentines would celebrate regardless, and Morgan would "continue to be mediocre and resentful." This public spat is a continuation of a previous online confrontation between the two. Months earlier, they argued over the Falkland Islands' sovereignty after Morgan suggested that if then-U.S. President Trump wanted to take the islands from Britain, Argentina should "claim the United States" in return.
