Ecuador Expects Extradition of 'Pipo' Criminal Leader in Coming Weeks

Ecuador's Interior Minister, John Reimberg, announced that the extradition of notorious criminal leader Wilmer Chavarría, known as 'Pipo,' from Europe to Ecuador is expected to occur in the coming weeks. This extradition is a top priority for Ecuadorian authorities, who are awaiting official judicial notification to initiate the transfer process.

The Spanish Audiencia Nacional gave its approval for 'Pipo's' extradition at the end of July. The court favored Ecuador's request over a parallel extradition bid from the United States, which sought 'Pipo' for alleged cocaine trafficking to California. Ecuador's primary objective is to have 'Pipo' complete a 16-year prison sentence for three homicides committed during a 2010 bank robbery.

Ecuadorian officials have been coordinating closely with international counterparts to ensure the extradition proceeds smoothly. Minister Reimberg noted that Ecuador has fulfilled all necessary legal requirements. This careful approach is informed by a previous instance where the extradition of another individual, William Alcívar Bautista, alias 'Willy,' was denied due to insufficient guarantees regarding his prison security. To avoid similar setbacks, Ecuador has proactively presented supporting documentation to U.S. authorities.

'Pipo' was apprehended in Málaga, Spain, last November after entering Europe in 2022 under a false identity, having reportedly faked his death in Ecuador. Investigations revealed he underwent seven facial surgeries to evade detection. Beyond his conviction for homicides, 'Pipo' is also implicated in Ecuador for the intellectual authorship of the 2023 assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. During questioning in February, he made unsubstantiated claims implicating the current president in the assassination.
