Ecuador's ANT Implements New System to Expedite Driver's License Processing

Ecuador's National Transit Agency (ANT) has introduced a new system aimed at expediting the process for obtaining and renewing driver's licenses. Starting July 20, 2026, the agency will pilot a new attention scheme designed to eliminate the lengthy wait times for appointments, which previously could extend up to two months. This pilot program will be in effect until September 30, 2026. The core of the new model involves a calendar system that assigns specific days for citizens to visit service centers based on the last digit of their national identity card (cédula). This aims to redistribute customer flow and improve efficiency. Users will still need to complete initial steps, including online applications and payments, through the ANT's virtual platform. However, once payment is confirmed, they can proceed to their chosen agency on their designated day. The ANT has outlined the schedule: Mondays are for identity cards ending in 1 and 2; Tuesdays for 3 and 4; Wednesdays for 5 and 6; Thursdays for 7 and 8; and Fridays for 9 and 0. The agency stated that individuals who already have appointments scheduled for the coming days should adhere to this new calendar. The ANT will evaluate the effectiveness of this pilot program over the two-month period to decide on its permanent implementation nationwide. While the appointment system has been modified, the requirements for obtaining or renewing a license remain unchanged. Applicants must present their current national ID, proof of voting, the generated appointment slip, payment confirmation, and a valid psychometric exam. For renewals, the expired license must also be submitted, or a police report if the license was lost. The agency also noted parallel efforts regarding extensions and discounts for expired licenses.
