Ecuador's 'Justice Lightning' drone squadron bolsters national security

Ecuador is bolstering its national security defenses with the advanced 'Rayo Justiciero' drone squadron, a key initiative by the Ministry of Defense to combat illicit activities. This technologically sophisticated unit, comprising elements from the Army, Air Force, and Navy, conducts continuous intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions across the country.

The primary targets for the "Rayo Justiciero" include drug trafficking, illegal mining, and transnational organized crime. The drones patrol silently, covering vast geographical areas and transmitting real-time data. This intelligence is crucial for identifying hidden airstrips, locating illegal mining operations, and guiding ground and air military interventions, significantly limiting the operational space for criminal organizations.

A notable aspect of the "Rayo Justiciero" program is that several of its drones are designed, developed, and manufactured within Ecuador. These aircraft feature autonomous flight capabilities, infrared sensors, night vision, and the ability to operate without conventional runways, enhancing the tactical capabilities of the Ecuadorian forces.

The squadron has achieved strategic successes, including the recent location and tracking of 'alias Churrón,' a leader of the Los Choneros criminal group who was wanted for extradition by the United States. The intelligence gathered by the drones was instrumental in his apprehension.

Furthermore, the effectiveness of Ecuador's drone technology has gained international recognition. During the multinational exercise PANAMAX 2026, the Ecuadorian Air Force utilized these unmanned aircraft for strategic reconnaissance, supporting special operations and positioning Ecuador as a regional leader in the operational use of aerial drone technology.
