Ecuador Seeks Poland, Argentina Cooperation in Activist's Death Probe

The Ecuadorian government is seeking international assistance from Poland and Argentina to bolster its investigation into the death of social and environmental activist Monika Silva Koniuszek. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility announced on Monday, June 15, 2026, that these diplomatic efforts are underway to ensure transparency and objectivity in the case.

Ecuador formally requested cooperation from the governments of Argentina and Poland, seeking the participation of independent and impartial observers and forensic medical experts. The Ministry of the Interior initiated these diplomatic actions. The goal is to enhance the rigor of the investigative process surrounding Silva's death.

Argentina's Supreme Court of Justice has agreed to provide technical cooperation. This assistance includes the participation of two forensic medical experts who will act as observers, fulfilling Ecuador's request. The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry emphasized that these measures are crucial for clarifying the circumstances of Monika Silva's death. The involvement of external forensic experts is considered fundamental to the investigation. Silva's mother arrived in Ecuador on Friday, June 16, and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has commented on the case, with John Reimberg calling for swift and thorough inquiries.
