Ecuador updates national medicine list, expands access to treatments

Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health has approved a significant update to the National List of Basic Medicines, a crucial document for regulating essential pharmaceuticals within the country's National Health System. This Tenth Revision, set to take effect in 2026 upon its official publication, expands the list to include 512 active ingredients, up from the 494 established in the 2023 revision.

The updated list is designed to enhance access to treatments and basic medications, with a particular focus on providing solutions for patients battling cancer and other priority diseases. Beyond adding new components, the revision includes specific modifications, necessary exclusions, and expanded indications within the national pharmaceutical system, aiming to address unmet medical needs.

Minister of Public Health Juan Carlos Aveiga highlighted that this measure is intended to foster a more efficient and equitable healthcare structure. The primary goal is to optimize the allocation of state resources, maximize patient benefits, and ensure the financial sustainability of the public health system. This strategic update aligns with the administration of President Daniel Noboa's efforts to improve healthcare delivery.

In a related development, the National Health Council (CONASA) also approved the National Policy for Human Resources in Health for the 2026-2030 period. Evelyn Montenegro, Undersecretary of Rectory, explained that this policy represents an unprecedented framework for Ecuador, aimed at improving planning, inter-institutional management, and professional training in collaboration with Higher Education Institutions. This comprehensive approach seeks to strengthen the overall healthcare workforce.
