Ecuador: Wake for Giomara Lozada extended for family from Spain; husband and children recovering

The funeral services for Giomara Lozada, wife of musician Mauricio Núñez, will continue until Saturday, August 15, 2026, in the southern part of Quito, Ecuador. The decision to extend the wake in the capital was made to accommodate relatives traveling from Spain who wished to attend the commemorative ceremonies. Lozada died following a traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of August 12 on the Santo Domingo-Quinindé highway.

Commemorative ceremonies are being held at the Salón Real Audiencia. According to the family's confirmed schedule, a tribute ceremony will take place on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Casa Girón chapel in southern Quito. Afterward, the funeral procession will proceed to the Camposanto Monteolivo Sur for the final interment.

During the wake, loved ones remembered Lozada for her cheerful and supportive personality. Her daughter, Elizabeth Núñez, 23, a vocalist for the musical group Tierra Canela, expressed her grief online and committed to supporting her younger siblings, aged 14 and eight. The family requested privacy during their period of mourning.

In parallel with the funeral arrangements, the Núñez family released an official statement regarding Mauricio Núñez's health. He underwent a complex, nine-hour surgery due to severe injuries to his lung, ribs, and costal arches. He remains under strict medical observation. The two minor children injured in the accident are also receiving care. Eight-year-old M.J. Núñez Lozada is scheduled for hip surgery, while 14-year-old M. Núñez Lozada is under continuous evaluation following reconstructive plastic surgery.
