Ecuador weather forecast: Rain and thunderstorms expected, with high UV warnings

Ecuador's National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) forecasts mixed weather conditions for the country, with rain and thunderstorms expected from Monday afternoon through Tuesday. The Amazon region is predicted to bear the brunt of the heaviest rainfall, experiencing moderate to strong intensity storms.

Light to moderate precipitation is anticipated across the Coast, the Insular region, and the Sierra. However, the Amazon is set for more significant downpours. Specific areas in the Litoral, such as northern Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo, along with western slopes of the Andes in Pichincha, will see lighter rains. The eastern slopes of the Andes are also expected to receive rain.

Adding to the weather concerns, Inamhi projects very high to extreme ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels across continental and insular Ecuador on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The Sierra will experience UV indices between 7 and 11, with Imbabura and Loja particularly high. Coastal areas will see indices from 7 to 10, and the Galapagos Islands between 7 and 8. Authorities advise against prolonged sun exposure between 10:00 and 15:00.

Nighttime temperatures in the central and southern Sierra are expected to range from 7°C to 11°C, with occasional drizzles in Loja. Quito will see minimums between 9°C and 12°C. In contrast, coastal areas like Guayaquil will have minimums around 25°C, while the Amazon region will experience lows between 16°C and 18°C. The Inamhi also noted atmospheric instability contributing to the forecast.
