Ecuadorian and US Vessels Patrol Galapagos Waters Against Illicit Activities

Naval vessels from Ecuador and the United States recently sailed together near the Galapagos Islands, engaging in tactical maneuvers to bolster joint operational capabilities. The joint activity involved the Ecuadorian Navy ship BAE Jambelí (MP-56) and the US Coast Guard vessel Robert Ward (WPC 1130).

This operation, which took place on August 21 in the Eastern Pacific, is a preparatory phase for the multinational exercise Galapex 2026. Led by Ecuador, Galapex 2026 is designed to enhance maritime security and counter illegal activities at sea. A key objective is to deter distant-water fishing fleets that engage in predatory practices.

The presence of these ships near the ecologically sensitive Galapagos archipelago underscores the growing maritime security cooperation between Ecuador and the United States. The US Southern Command noted that Ecuador is a member of the "Americas' Coalition Against Cartels" and actively participates in efforts against drug trafficking.

The cooperation aims to dismantle logistical networks and pursue criminal leaders.
