Eels defend Luai's 2027 signing ahead of Chiefs move

Parramatta Eels coach Jason Ryles stands by the decision to sign NRL star Jarome Luai for a one-season stint, emphasizing the immediate need for experienced leadership within the struggling team. Ryles acknowledged that Luai's arrival might seem unconventional, especially given the club's focus on developing younger talent. However, he argued that Luai's proven track record as a four-time premiership winner with the Penrith Panthers offers invaluable benefits. "We're sitting in a spot on the ladder that we don't want to be," Ryles stated, highlighting the team's current 15th position. "It's no-one's fault directly but we need more experienced players. Jarome fits that bill at the moment." He sees Luai's presence as a crucial step to stabilize the team and provide a mentorship role for emerging halves like Joash Papalii, Lincoln Fletcher, and Lorenzo Talataina.
