Egypt Condemns Iran Attacks, Citing Regional Security Concerns

Egypt has strongly condemned recent Iranian attacks on Gulf Arab states, labeling them a dangerous escalation and a violation of regional security. Cairo's Foreign Ministry stated that the attacks on Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait constituted a "flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of these sisterly states." Egypt stressed that the security of Arab nations is intrinsically linked to its own national security, categorically rejecting any actions that undermine state sovereignty or threaten territorial integrity.

These condemnations mark a significant setback for the improving ties between Egypt and Iran, which had been moving toward full diplomatic relations. A key condition for normalization was that Iran must not threaten the security of the Gulf or the wider region. Despite the tensions, Iran is actively seeking to mend the relationship and restore momentum. Iran's mission in Cairo announced that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with the head of Iran's Interests Section in Cairo to discuss bilateral relations. Araghchi emphasized the importance of continued dialogue, noting that Egypt-Iran relations have progressed and that consultations are vital for supporting peace and stability in the Middle East. The two countries severed diplomatic ties in 1979 but resumed them at the chargé d'affaires level 11 years later, with meetings to develop relations gaining pace since 2023.
